update

hey sorry for the long wait, i meant to update the blog when i was in NZ but i lost the password and it took a while to get things sorted out. my bad. NZ was good, i got a feel for the snow again and the knee felt good. here is a link to some pics from NZ: http://picasaweb.google.com/tague.thorson/NZ?authkey=Gv1sRgCLDy-rblrdfB3wE&feat=directlink . not sure how that is going to work but its worth a try.

back in SLC for a while now. school is good, things are busy but thats ok. Dryland is going well. I am starting to get into racing shape. I have been slowly adding jumping into my training and the knee feels good. It is nice to play sports again, i have been playing soccer once or twice a week with the team; its a lot of fun.

it is the middle of the term right now so all my classes are busy, I am looking forward to midterms being over and getting closer to the ski season. The weather in slc is getting wintery, it snowed here on Wednesday and has been chilly for the last week or so. Thats all i have for now; now that i have the password again I will be updating the blog more often and I will try to link to more pictures.

thanks, tague

summer

Filed under: Uncategorized — taguethorson @ 1:56 am

well its been a while. at first i didn’t write because i wanted to wait and see how things with skiing worked out, then it was forgetfulness; but that excuse only works for so long. the reality is that i just kept procrastinating and anyone who is reading this knows it is something i am very good at. anyway, this spring i was told that i would not be named to the us ski team again. i am sure there are many reasons for this, they don’t matter, the result is that i will be skiing for the University of Utah again. this is not suck a bad thing, it gives me a chance to recover and get back into skiing without the pressure from the ski team, it is also a lot cheaper then the ski team would have been. i am confident that cost was part of the decision with the ski team.

as for the knee, it is doing very well. i am working on impact exercises now and biking a few times a week. it is causing me no problems, because of this i will be going to new zealand to ski in august so that i will be ready to race in december. this is exciting for me because i really enjoyed my time there a few years ago and i have a number of friends there.

summer school is getting old but i hope  its making me smarter, not hard i know. anyway it is making for long mornings and the weather in the afternoons isn’t all that comfortable, its hot, period. i am planning on posting some pictures from last fall and winter on-line, i don’t think they will be on this site, most likely on a picasa web page but once i get them up i will set up a link.

hope everyone is having a good summer

Hey. I don’t have much new to say. I was in Vail over the weekend which was fun, I got to see a bunch of old friends and coaches. I took some pictures but nothing turned out that great, oh well. Lets see what else has happened; I am now allowed to bike on the flats which is exciting because I missed almost all of bike season last summer. In a few weeks I will be able to really ride. I have signed up for summer classes at Utah because I can’t ski again until the middle of August. I am taking physics 1 and 2 and a chem lab. I think that is about all that has happened lately. Hopefully I have something more interesting to say next time. thanks

March Update

Filed under: Uncategorized — taguethorson @ 5:08 pm

Hey all. I am off crutches now. Its a nice feeling. I still carry one with me for longer distances, just in case my leg gets tired, but that hasn’t happened yet. You don’t really appreciate the ease of walking until you can’t do it; I have only been walking since Sunday and I can already walk farther without tiring then I could go on crutches. My therapy is starting to increase in intensity, but its not going to go very fast, after a busy session yesterday my knee was a little sore in the joint area, and around my knee cap, which I fell on about a week and a half ago. I think that about sums up whats going on. Hope everyone is enjoying spring, I know I am. Thanks

Beginning of March

Hi all. I know its been a while. I planned on updating after my surgery but, I forgot and well, there wasn’t much to say. I am sure some of you were interested to hear how the surgery went. It went well; I now know it went well because of how my leg feels. I have been doing rehab, but have been taking a little break from serious work outs because I have so much time to recover. I expect to be able to return to snow in August. I am on crutches again, by the time i get off crutches I will have spent almost 20 weeks on crutches in the last year. Anyway, I get to start weight barring at the end of the week and I will hopefully be done with crutches at the end of the following week. Lets see, what else is going on… The weather in SLC has been hot and cold, one day it is 70 out and the next it is snowing. On the warm days I am really wishing I could go bike. Oh, one more thing about skiing, I am not sure at this point what my situation with the US Ski Team is going to be for next year. If they follow precedence I should be back on the team, however times are difficult and sponsorship is down, so I am not positive what will happen, they have not told me anything at this time. I will let you know as soon as I know, however I would not expect any information on this in the near future.

I will try to be better about updating the blog, maybe i should set a calander reminder, anyhow, thanks for reading and I will check back in more often.

February Update

Filed under: Uncategorized — taguethorson @ 4:02 am

Hey everybody. This hasn’t been the exciting year I was hoping for but that is part of sports. I had an MRI a little over a week ago and based on that I will be having another knee surgery. I am scheduled for surgery on Friday the 13 of this month, it will be to repair some lateral meniscus and maybe another piece of cartilage on my femur. I am disappointed about this but it goes with the territory. I will be freezing my points, so they should stay reasonable. I am not sure how exactly this will effect my status with the ski team but I am trying to figure out what their stance is on it. Other then that nothing new is going on. All I can say is that I am looking forward to getting healthy and being able to ski and be active again. Thanks, Tague

its been a while

Filed under: January — taguethorson @ 1:59 am

Sorry i have not updated this in a while. First was Christmas, hope everyone had a good one; then was new years, hope it was fun. Then was bad news and i don’t like to spread bad news, but i figure I should update this a bit. At Winter Park I tweaked my knee, it then continued to bother me during the entire Europe trip. When i returned to the states I talked to my doctor and the ski team; looking at my situation we decided that taking time off now was important. It came down to a few key points, 1. that i was not able to perform at anywhere near 100%, much less 4 days in a row, and 2. a bone bruise (what I have) gets worse with use and needs full rest to recover. So my options where take time off now and try to be as ready as possible for February and March. The current theory about the cause is that a bone is more susceptible to bruising for up to a year after a bone bruise, i suffered a severe bone bruise in April, i was on crutches for around 6 weeks; so we think that the bone had not healed fully. That is only a guess. The why does not matter. As far as the immediate future, i have been resting the knee and doing core and upper body workouts, i have a doctors appointment on Thursday for a lubricating injection, and hope to ski early next week. I will update the blog again after the injection. Thank you so much for the patience and I apologize for not wanting to post bad news.

Hey all, its been a while. Nice to hear from you all. Things have been a little bit of a mess over here, so much snow; but I will finally be racing. I race tomorrow and Saturday night. They are both Europa Cup SL in Italy. There is not much going on here, finally got some good training in Austria, but then more snow arrived. I am looking forward to getting back to the US, this has felt like a long trip because of all the bad weather and lack of good training and racing. I think the trip in January will feel shorter because it will be busier. Thanks for the support. Tague

12/10

So the snow seems to be following us around. After getting several feet of snow in CO before the races we are now getting snow before the Europa Cup races. It is dumping out, from my guess we are getting around 1 inch per hour or more. Anyway, I am in St. Vigil Italy for the Kromplatz(not sure how its spelled) Europa Cup SL. So far the trip has been uneventful, just a lot of snow. Life is fairly boring, a lot of down time which is kind of OK because of the jet leg, but I would rather have more to do. I have skied 3 days. Our first day was here in St. Vigil, free skiing on the race hill, it was awesome. The snow was fantastic and the hill is sweet, I definitely had some of the most fun ever free skiing on GS race skis. Yesterday we trained GS at Paganella, in the Trento region, I think the ski area is Andalo or something to that extent. Anyway the snow was good and the hill was not to bad. Today we trained SL but it dumped all night and we had almost 8 inches of snow, it took 5 slip runs to get the track semi clean and at that point it was snowing so hard we gave up and ran the course because it was snowing almost as fast as we could lap around the lift and clear it off (the lift is only about 3 min). That is all. Thanks

Europe Dec #1

Filed under: Europe Dec 08 — taguethorson @ 5:25 pm

Hey everybody, nice to hear from you all. I made it across the pond. The last few days have been busy. It was nice to be racing again, I was just a little nervous before the first race. I think I only slept around 2 or 2 and a half hours. Anyway day 1 i skied OK first run and tried to get after it a little more second run only to blow out at the first vertical combination. Day 2 i skied poorly first run, i was hanging on my edges, so second run i let things go a little more but was not able to keep things in control, once again i did not finish. Day 3 was supposed to be GS but there was not enough of a snow base anywhere so all the races were switched to SL. Skiing day 3 was very difficult, we moved from Loveland to Winter Park, and it snowed more then a foot overnight before the race. Conditions were very soft and difficult, so i tried to make sure I was not hanging on my edges, the awkward set and snow conditions I blew out half way down. The last day… i skied cautious first run, i wanted to finish a race. Second run I started 11, my time was way out but I made the flip, and i tried to attack the course, I skied much better, a few little mistakes but i finished 1 sec out on the run despite my problems.

Now I am in Innsbruck, had a good time in denver friday night and no issues with the flight over. Life is good, hope you can say the same. Thanks for reading and writing.
